Directed by James March, the film tells the true story of Jane and Stephen Hawking. Starring Eddie Redmayne as Stephen and Felicity Jones as Jane, The Theory of Everything centres on intelligence, love and disability. Those three concepts meet throughout the film, showing us that life is never either joyful or miserable, but it always surprises us with bittersweet moments.
Back in 1963, young astrophysics student Stephen Hawking falls in love with Jane Wilde, whose academic interest is in literature. Despite his profound knowledge of mathematics and physics, Stephen still cannot decide on his thesis topic, which concerns his friends and professors. Eventually, at a lecture on black holes, Stephen comes up with an idea that black holes may not have been created during the Big Bang, which becomes the subject of his thesis.
Concentrating on his research, the genius astrophysics is about to achieve fame on a world scale and his life is going to change for good. One day, however, Stephen loses control of his body, falls and hits his head. He is then diagnosed with motor neurone disease and informed that his body functions are fading, leaving him about two years to live. So his life is indeed going to change, but in the completely opposite direction. Knowing that her boyfriend is doomed to certain death, Jane stands before a hard choice about her future.
The Theory of Everything covers the problem of obstacles in life. Jane and Stephen are both youthful, ambitious and educated adults whose dreams are yet to come true. They share the love and support each other. All of a sudden comes a real drama that challenges their lives, future and relationship. Although Stephen has a brilliant mind, his body doesn’t cooperate. That is a genuine tragedy!
The movie is doubtlessly ambitious, thought-provoking and well-worth seeing. Each scene is intensified by the incredible soundtrack, created by Jóhann Jóhannsson, which evokes a range of emotions, from joy through deep thought to nostalgia. Along the way, Stephen says: “While there’s life, there’s hope.’’ Is there then hope for Jane and Stephen Hawking?
